Paris Proposal at Night: How to Propose Under the Sparkling Eiffel Tower

4 min read

A proposal at night in Paris has something special: the Eiffel Tower glows gold, the city slows down, and for five minutes every hour the whole Tower sparkles. I'm Max, a Paris photographer with more than 10 years of experience, and I've photographed well over 100 proposals, many of them after dark. Here's how to plan yours so it goes smoothly, and how I photograph it without your partner suspecting a thing.

Why propose at night in Paris

  • The light: the Tower is lit in warm gold, and the photos feel elegant and cinematic.

  • The sparkle: 20,000 lights flash all over the Tower for five minutes at the start of every hour. It's the perfect cue for your question.

  • Fewer day-trippers: the evening crowd is calmer, especially in autumn and winter.

  • It feels like an occasion: evening outfits, dinner afterwards, a toast with champagne.

When does the Eiffel Tower sparkle?

The golden lights come on at nightfall. From then on, the Tower sparkles for five minutes at the top of every hour, until the lights go off around midnight (a bit later in summer).

  • November to February: the Tower lights up around 5:30pm, so you can propose on an early sparkle and still keep your dinner plans.

  • Spring and autumn: night falls between about 7pm and 8:30pm.

  • June and July: it only gets dark after 10pm, so a night proposal means a late evening.

When you book, I check the exact time of nightfall for your date and we choose which sparkle to aim for. More details in my guide to an Eiffel Tower night photoshoot.

Where to propose at night

Trocadéro

The classic view of the whole Tower, and the most impressive spot for the sparkle. It's also the busiest at night, so I pick the corner of the esplanade where we can keep a clean background.

Bir-Hakeim bridge

The metal colonnade and the street lamps, with the lit Tower just behind. More intimate than Trocadéro, and one of my favorite frames for a proposal.

Pont d'Iéna and the Seine

The bridge right in front of the Tower and the quays below it, with the lights reflected in the water. A good choice for a quieter moment.

Champ de Mars

The lawns at the foot of the Tower, with the whole Tower in the frame. Relaxed and open, and easy to continue with couple photos.

For daytime options, see my Eiffel Tower proposal page.

How to time the moment

I usually suggest arriving 20 to 30 minutes before the sparkle you're aiming for. You can walk to the spot without rushing, and I have time to get in position. We agree on a simple signal in advance, so I know exactly when you're about to kneel. If you'd rather not depend on the clock, propose a little before the sparkle and enjoy it together right after: the lights make a beautiful backdrop for your first photos with the ring.

How I keep it a surprise

Before you arrive, I check the spot and take a position that looks natural, like a tourist photographing the Tower. Your partner won't notice me. If the spot is too crowded on the night, we move to a backup spot nearby that we chose together beforehand.

Prefer a simpler option? Tell your partner you've booked a couple photoshoot at night, and propose during the session whenever it feels right. Read more on how to plan a surprise proposal in Paris.

After the yes

Take a minute to enjoy it. Then I guide you through relaxed photos of the two of you around the Tower, with a few close-ups of the ring. You don't need to know how to pose: I tell you where to stand and where to look, and most couples feel comfortable within a few minutes. I edit every photo myself so skin tones stay natural against the lights, and your private gallery arrives within 5 working days.

How much does a night proposal photographer cost?

Sessions after 5pm have their own rates: €200 for 30 minutes (10 edited photos) and €350 for 1 hour. I recommend 1 hour, so you have time after the proposal for photos with the ring. In winter, night falls early, so a session that starts before 5pm can already end with the Tower lit up, at the day rate. All details are on the prices page.

Want to add something? I can organize a violinist, flowers or a bottle of champagne with two glasses on request. See all options on my proposal photoshoot page.

A few practical tips

  • Keep the ring box in an inside pocket, not in a bag your partner might open.

  • Bring a warm layer: it gets cold by the Seine in the evening, even in spring.

  • Light or bright outfits stand out better against the night sky than black or navy.

  • Book dinner for after the proposal: it's much easier to enjoy a meal once the question has been asked.
