How to Plan a Surprise Proposal in Paris (With a Photographer)

Proposing in Paris is a dream for many people. It's also a moment you only get one chance at, so a bit of planning makes all the difference. Here is how I help my clients plan a surprise proposal in Paris, and capture it properly.

Step 1: choose the place

The Eiffel Tower is the most iconic choice, and for good reason. But it's not the only one, and a slightly less obvious spot can make the moment even more personal:

  • Trocadéro or the quiet streets around the Eiffel Tower for the classic view. See my Eiffel Tower photoshoot.

  • The banks of the Seine or a bridge like Pont Alexandre III.

  • A Paris garden, calmer and more intimate. See Paris gardens photoshoots.

  • Palais-Royal or Montmartre for a more hidden, local feel.

I'll help you choose based on what your partner loves and the time of day.

Step 2: decide how to keep the surprise

There are two ways to do it:

  • The photoshoot cover story: you tell your partner you've booked a couple photoshoot. They'll be dressed for photos and won't suspect anything. During the session, you propose when it feels right, and I'm already in position.

  • The total surprise: I wait discreetly at an exact spot, and you arrive as if you were just walking by. It's more dramatic, but you'll need a good reason to get your partner dressed up.

Step 3: choose the time

I usually recommend early morning. The famous spots are almost empty, so you have a real moment for the two of you, and the soft light of sunrise is very flattering. Golden hour and the Eiffel Tower lit up at night are also beautiful options. More in the best time for a photoshoot in Paris.

Step 4: plan the photos after the "yes"

The proposal itself lasts a few seconds. Right after, we continue with a short couple photoshoot, so you get relaxed, happy photos of the two of you, with the ring. Most of my proposal clients book at least 1 hour for this reason.

Extras to make it even more special

On request, I can help you organize extras like a violinist, a ride in a vintage 2CV, or a dress rental for your partner. Ask me when you contact me and I'll tell you what's possible for your date.

Don't forget the ring

It sounds obvious, but with the excitement of the day, it happens. Keep it somewhere safe and easy to reach, and make sure the box opens easily.
